Our furniture work at IF/THEN centers on a few underlying inquires: new aesthetics and assemblies of off-the-shelf parts; use of the specific local capabilities of small scale local (Bay Area) manufacturing; and the expansion of architectural projects into the scale of the human body.
Core Furniture is an exploration of these themes, using off-the-shelf components and sheet goods to make light, beautiful, flat-pack furniture which is an ode to the movement of nomadic furniture from the 1970s. That work, much of which was located in Northern California, focused on ‘kits of parts’ which created structures and furniture for adaptable living. This 21st century update uses hardware and aluminum extrusions to combine a more industrial utility with flat-pack furniture, creating a new approach to furniture that moves and changes with you.
