Surplus Spaces

Empty parking lots, gas stations, and other low density structures are increasingly empty and slated for demolition. But the process of developing them into higher density structures takes more than 5 years in the Bay Area. And in the meantime, these structures sit vacant, inaccessible, and unused.

Surplus Spaces imagines public temporary uses for these spaces in the East Bay, which has limited public space in many areas and where space is at a premium. The project asks: how can we build an imagination of public space through empty space, and how can joy and community be more integrated and valued along side ongoing development plans.
