San Pablo Ramble

The San Pablo Ramble was a roving event along San Pablo Avenue with custom designed portable furniture. Along the ramble, we visited local businesses housing a collection of curated films of West Berkeley and West Oakland along the route. In conjunction with the event, we collected over 200 stories from local residents about their connections with the Avenue and the area.

San Pablo Avenue is a service corridor in the East Bay of the Bay Area. It is seeing rapid development with little community input. Our research showed that lack of public space along the Avenue makes it hard for the local community to imagine the space as a public, shared space. The Ramble allowed us to create public space as we went, and collect stories through local businesses and interviews about the role that this commercial artery played for the community.
